Данное учебно-методическое пособие состоит из двух частей и представляет собой сборник грамматических упражнений и текстов с заданиями для лиц, имеющих базовый уровень знаний в рамках средней школы.

Тексты, включенные в данное пособие, сопровождаются несколькими упражнениями, примечаниями, в которых комментируются трудные для понимания места в тексте. Для повышения эффективности работы к текстам прилагается словарь.

Тематика текстов отвечает требованиям программы изучения английского языка в техническом вузе.

Методические рекомендации.

         Эффективность работы по данному пособию может быть обеспечена сочетанием самостоятельной работы студента с периодическим контролем со стороны преподавателя.

Пособие состоит из нескольких блоков: блок 1 включает текст и последующие задания к прочитанному тексту. Задания сформулированы таким образом, чтобы студент не просто смог прочесть текст, но и понимал его содержание. В ходе выполнения заданий студенту, возможно, придется обратиться к грамматическому справочнику и повторить нужный для данного текста раздел, а также поработать со словарем. Цель этих заданий – помочь усвоить языковой материал, необходимый для понимания содержания данного текста. Задания в данном разделе предусматривают неоднократное обращение студента к тексту, что способствует лучшему пониманию прочитанного.  Для повышения эффективности работы все упражнения следует выполнять  письменно в рабочей тетради. Блок 2 носит грамматический характер, направлен на закрепление пройденного материала.

Сборник включает  упражнения разной направленности, отмечены основные темы, изучаемые на первом курсе для студентов СПО.

Цель этого сборника – тренировка и закрепление грамматического аспекта изученного языкового и развитие навыка чтение без словаря научно-популярных текстов с пониманием общего содержания и последующим изложением его на русском языке.

Раздел 1.

Роль английского языка в современном мире.

An English-speaking World.

Language belongs to each of us. We live in and by language. We all speak and we all listen. We are all interested in the origin of the words, in how they appear and die.

The rise of English is a story of wonderful success. In the 5th century only the people who inhabited Great Britain spoke English. But their English was not the language we know today. At the end of the 16th century, English was the native language of about 6 million people. At that time English was used only in Great Britain.

Nowadays 750 million people all over the world use English. Half of them speak it as a mother tongue. There are 2700 languages in the world. English is the richest among them. English has a vocabulary of about 500 000 words, German- 185 000, French-100 000.

In the 21st century English has become the language of the planet. It is the first truly global language. Three quarters of the world's mail is in English. More than 50% of the scientific periodicals and 80% of the information in the world's computers are also in English. English is the main language of the business. It is the language of sport.

The English language surrounds us. It is constantly changing. Some words die, some change their meanings. And all the time new words appear in the language.

My best friend

1. Friendship plays a very important role in our life. People usually make friends when they go to the same school, work together or live nearby. It is difficult to explain how two quite different persons make friends. You can have a lot of acquaintances but only a few true friends. It depends on many things. Among them are age, social status, mutual interests and sometimes personal qualities. It is easier to make friends with persons who are much alike you, though sometimes these factors are of no importance.

2.  Now  I want to tell you about people whom I consider to be my friends. One of them is Nick. He is an old friend of mine. We went to the first form together because he lived next door to me. Now he is a tall young man with dark hair, blue eyes and oval face. He is rather strong and well-built because he is a sportsman. He played volleyball well in our school team.

3. He is going to enter the Mathematical faculty of the University this year. He was always strong in mathematics and he helped me very often with my home tasks. I think he will be able to pass his entrance examinations and become a student.

4. My another best friend is Marina. She is a very pretty girl. She has big blue eyes, fair hair and a nice smile. She is a schoolgirl now. She studies well and wants to become a doctor. She will try to enter the Medical Institute next year and I hope her first attempt will be successful. I’m sure she will make a good doctor.

5. I often meet my friends. We talk about our school life and our schoolmates. I like to spend my free time with my friends.

Family matters

  1. I’ m going to speak about my relations with my parents. I see my parents as my best friends. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. At the age of 14 I began to grow away from my family slightly. I wanted more independence and started arguing about many things with my parents: clothes, friends, pocket money and music and lots of other things. I thought parents criticized me too much. They said I watched too much TV. It wasn’t good for me. They didn’t like me to watch horror films or films with a lot of gore and violence. They didn’t let me watch late-time movies saying that I must be in bed by 11, but I enjoyed being frightened. My parents don’t like me to listen to very loud music. It annoys them. Sometimes they don’t like the way I spend my pocket money on.
  2. They also say I have to be home by a certain time if I go out with my friends. My parents expect me to keep my room tidy and clean and do the washing up at home. It’s my responsibility to go shopping for food. I appreciate the comfort and protection that my family gives me. Mutual respect and trust, caring and sharing are the basis of happiness. My parents and I have similar tastes in books and music, though we are totally different.
  3. They want me to be happy in what I’m doing. They want me to have a fulfilled life and choose the right career in the future. They want me to find my niche in life. They tell me that if I work hard and strive to achieve my ambition, my career plans will materialize.

I study at Rostov  technical school. We have a four-stored building. On the first floor you can see the security guard who is keeping order and canteen on the left. In the institution there are a lot of laboratories where we do practical training, it is a lot of professional equipment on which we practice our skills. Teachers are friendly, explain a material well if something I don’t understand they explain anew. In college we have additional subjects  for example “Image studio”. There we learn to do correctly a make-up and to change a shape of a face. And there is a hairdresser’s art where  we practice hairdressers of different times.

We have a good physical preparation too. In some days we go to a sports center from our college. We visit different actions: theatres, festivals, museums, exhibitions. From my point of view it develops our inner world, helps to become more developed, helps to estimate the situations. My group is very active; we try to participate in many actions. We always support each other.

My working day.

There I wash myself and clean my teeth. Sometimes I take a shower. After that I go back to my bedroom, dress myself and brush my hair. In five minutes I am ready enough for breakfast. I always have a cup of tea or coffee and a sandwich. After breakfast I take my bag, put on my coat and go to the college.
  2. I live not far from my college and it takes me only 10 minutes to walk there. I am never late for the 1st lesson, because I come to the college a few minutes before the bell. I leave my coat in the cloakroom and go to the classroom. The lessons begin at 8 o’clock and at half past one they are over. Sometimes after the lessons I go to the library to I take some books. I usually do my home task at home. As a rule, I have no free time on my week-days.
  3. Sometimes I have dinner at my college canteen. For dinner I usually have soup for the first course, meat or fish with some salad for the second. I drink milk or a cup of tea.
  4. Twice a week I go to the swimming pool. I play volleyball in the college team and we have our training at our big gymnasium.
  5. In the evening all the members of our family get together. We have supper together, watch TV or read books. Reading is my hobby. I like to read detective stories or books of modern writers. At about eleven o’clock I go to bed.

  5. All my family like gardening. We grow our own vegetables and fruit. In winter my father does a lot of DIY at home, maintaining and improving our flat. My mother enjoys reading and watching TV, inviting friends for a meal and doing some needlework.

       When we want to buy something, we go to a shop. I like to do my shopping at big department stores and supermarkets. They sell various goods under one roof and this is very convenient. A department store, for example, true to its name, is composed of many departments: ready-made clothes, fabrics, shoes, sports goods, toys, china and glass, electric appliances, cosmetics, linen, curtains, cameras, records, etc. You can buy everything you like there.  In the women's clothing department you can find dresses, costumes, blouses, skirts, coats, beautiful underwear and many other things. In the men's clothing department you can choose suits, trousers, overcoats, ties, etc. In the knitwear department one can buy sweaters, cardigans, short-sleeved and long-sleeved pullovers, woolen jackets. In the perfumery they sell face cream and powder, lipstick, lotions and shampoos.

       In a food supermarket we can also buy many different things at once: sausages, fish, sugar, macaroni, flour, cereals, tea. At the butcher's there is a wide choice of meat and poultry. At the bakery you buy brown and white bread, rolls, and biscuits. Another shop we frequently go to is the greengrocery which is stocked by cabbage, potatoes, onions, cucumbers, carrots, beetroots, green peas and what not. Everything is sold here ready-weighed and packed. If you call round at a dairy you can buy milk, cream, cheese, butter and many other products.

The Olympic game

  1. More than two thousand five hundred years ago the first Olympic Games took place at Olympia in Greece. Only men could take part in them. Women were not allowed even to watch the competitions at the stadium under the fear of death penalty.  
  2. The Olympic Games took place every four years and the time between each Game was called an Olympiad. The Games had been for about eleven hundred years, until the emperor Theodosius banned them for religious reasons in 394 A.D.
  3. The revival of the Olympic Games began long  time afterwards, in 1892, when a young French teacher Pierre de Coubertin made a public speech before the Union of French sports club  in Paris. At that time many people in many countries practiced various kinds of sports and games. They wanted to make friends and compete with sportsmen from other lands.
  4. The first official modern Olympic Games were organized in Athens, the capital of Greece, in April 1896. Two hundred and eighty five athletes from thirteen countries took part in them. During these Games there were competitions in nine kinds of sports: athletics, swimming, gymnastics, weight lifting,  wrestling, tennis, fencing, cycling and shooting.
  5. Winter sports made their Olympic debut in 1908, when ice figure – skating was included in the Olympic programme among summer sports. International Competitions in winter sports often took place in the beginning of the 20th century, but only in 1925 the International Olympic Committee made the decision to consider the International Winter Sports Week, that had taken place in 1924 in France as the first winter Olympic Games and to hold them since that time on.
  6. At first only men took part in the Games. Later rules were changed many times. Women were allowed to participate in the competitions, many new sports and games were added to the Olympic programme, several sports were stricken off. One thing remains unchanged – the popularity of these festivals of health, youth and beauty. Different cities of the world welcomed sportsmen from many countries. Modern Olympics keep old traditions of equality, honour and justice of the international competitions. They help to bring peoples closer together.
  7. In 1980 the 13th winter Olympic Games were held in Lake Placid, USA. In summer the Games of the 22nd Olympiad were held in Moscow. New sports complexes and living quarters were built. Stadiums, cycling tracks, swimming pools and hippodromes were equipped with various modern techniques and devices.
  8. About half a million spectators were present at competitions, millions in our country and abroad watched them on the television. For two weeks the flag with five coloured interweaved rings flew over Moscow and the fire, lit by the sun rays in Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, was burning above it.
